The Colours of War

Exhibition
October 24, 2000

Marche Bonsecours, Vieux-Montreal

Montreal is hosting a very unique exhibition this fall. The Colours of War is a collection of art work by Belgian soldiers at the First World War (1914-1918) Front.

This exhibition is interesting for its historical point of view. From talking to some of the 380 people who attended the official opening ceremony, soldiers of that war could have been considered as reporters of their time. Truly, it was not as hectic a front as the 2nd World War. This left time for soldiers to draw or paint and express their artistic talent for future generations. Through images of destroyed monuments or plain sceneries, visitors understand that life still went on with the changing seasons.

The exhibition should not be missed for the richness of the artistic life it represents. At the beginning of the 20th century, numerous great artistic movements were blooming and are represented in many of the artwork on loan, i.e. : post-impressionism, expressionism, fauvism, and cubism.

This is the first time these art pieces were ever shown on this side of the Atlantic. The curator of the Royal Military Museum of Brussels was present to describe and explain detail features of most paintings.

This show is organized by the Belgian Consulate of Montréal, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Military Museum of Brussels, with help from the City of Montréal.

Exhibition will be held from October 23 to December 10, 2000, every day from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.

The Bonsecours Market is located in Old Montréal. It is very close to the Old Port, Place Jacques-Cartier, and numerous other historic sites of Montréal.
